Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Denver Broncos Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers improved their Pre-Season Record to
1-1 with a 22-7 win against the
Denver Broncos. Even
though it is only pre-season, there were positive things
that were evident in this game.
Despite missing five starters, the defense held up fairly
well. Facing an explosive
Broncos
offense, the Packers
did not give up a big run, and created 2 turnovers in
the first half. The defense did however, give up an 80 yard
touchdown drive, capped off by a 1 yard pass from Brian Griese
to Patrick Hape. That drive would have resulted in a punt, had
Tod McBride not been called for a roughing penalty. McBride was
just a step late in a game that is played at a high rate of speed.
He should be credited with being in the right place, and putting a
serious hit on the reciever. Mike McKenzie also had a very good game.
He showed, after a season of nagging injuries, that he is ready to be the
playmaker he was in his rookie season.
McKenzie first stepped in front of Eddie Kennison for a pick, and then
stripped the ball from Rod Smith after Smith caught a bullet from Griese.
Turnovers can completely change the outcome of any NFL game. With Kabeer
Gbaja-Biamila putting constant pressure on opposing quarterbacks in the first
two pre-season games, look for it to be a pick-parade in the Packers secondary this year.
The offense showed that it needs to get in sync in the next couple weeks. It is not a
lack of talent that caused Corey Bradford to drop balls, it is a lack of
concentration. He WILL get better! He just needs more "Healthy Time" on the field.
In the mean time, Donald Driver ahs used this opportunity to move up to the number
3 reciever. Driver had 3 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. The explosion he showed
after making the catch, allowed him to scoot into the endzone when many recievers would
have been stopped short. He also showed he wasn't going to be denied, when he out-jumped
Darryl Pounds for an acrobatic 32-yard reception. This kid is a player! The running
game however, showed very little in the absense of the top two backs,
Ahman Green and Dorsey Levens. The Packers offense used to be suited for a larger
halfback. After
Green's success last year, their line looks to be one that is now
more suited for a quicker back. Look for De'Mond Parker to excel in the next two
pre-season games. I believe he is the best candidate for the number 3 halfback spot.
This game against
Denver also showed a much improved offensive line. They (The O-Line) are young,
and will improve upon the stellar season they had last year.
Bubba Franks seems poised
to do the same. Wasn't it amazing seeing him snab that high pass from
Brett Favre in the first quarter. You can't teach that!
Brett Favre was at it
again, throwing darts all over the field. I really don't need to say much about
Favre, he is in mid-season form in the pre-season. He looks ready to conquer the
NFL again, this season.
One last thing I would like to talk about is Bill Schroeder. Scouts all over the NFL
have said he is just an average number 2 reciever. Well listen up! That is pure garbage.
Schroeder is an excellent athelete that WILL BE
Favre's got to guy this year.
He has the heart of a lion, and really goes after the ball. All this without the experience
of playing against major college football teams. I really do believe, with a little more
experience, that he could be headed to the
Pro-Bowl! That's the way I saw it... BigE.
