The Packers took what appeared to be a safe lead of 17-3 at half time, only to see San Diego rally to take the momentum and a 21-17 lead, before the Packers woke up and staged a rally themselves to win 38-21.
The Packers opened the game on a positive note. An eight play, sixty yard drive which saw Ahmann Green break Jim Taylor's single season rushing record.Also on the drive, Favre kept it moving,when on third and six, he passed to Driver for a gain of 17, several plays later on third and five, he hit Driver again for a huge gai of 24 yards. Two plays later, Green scored the game's first touch down giving the Packers an early 7-0 advantage. The Chargers would storm back and score their only points of the first half on the next drive with a nine play drive which resulted in a Steve Christie 20 yard field goal and 7-3 score to close out the first quarter.
The Packers added to their total several times in the second quarter. About midway through the second quarter, the Packers recovered a fumble at the 38. Favre again, directed the offense, connecting with Henderson on one third down play, the drive eventually resulted in a Ryan Longwell 32 yard field goal for a 10-3 lead. The Chagers again stormed back as Drew Brees drov them down field towards an apparent score. On a third and 10 at the 15, Brees threw into heavy coverage, and Darren Sharper intercepted the pass. Favre then directed traffic, as he hit Driver for a gain of 18. Next Javon Walker gained 19 yards on a reeption. A few plays later, on first down at the 2, Favre hit Driver in the end zone for the touch down. Longwell added the p.a.t. and the Packers took a 17-3 lead into the locker room at half time.
San Diego opened the third quarter on an impressive 11 play drive which was highlighted by Brees passing to Gates for a gigantic gain of 48 yards down to the 22. The Packer defense eventually stopped the run, and forced the Chargers to settle for a 27 yard field goal to make it a 17-6 game.
The fourth quarter saw a total of 36 points put up on the board. The Chargers started off first as they intercepted a Favre pass and returned it 26 yards to the 48. Several key plays on the offense kept the Chargers moving. Eventually the Chargers found themselves near the goal line. On second and goal, Brees hit Tomlinson for the score making it 17-12. The Chargers elected togo for the two point conversion, and it was successful to make it a close game at 17-14. Next, the Chargers struck just like lighting, as Brees passed to Tomlnson, who beat his coverage and raced 69 yards for the touch down. With the extra point converted, the Chargers now led 21-17. After that score, the Packers got a major wake-up call and staged a rally for the win. On the kick-off...... Davenport received the ball and returned it 45 yards to the 42. Two plays later, Favre passed to Ferguson for a 40 yard score. Longwell added the p.a.t. and the Packers were back on top 24-21 with 11:17 left in the game. On the next series, the defense forced Brees to fumble and the Packers recovered at the 1. Favre then tossed a light pass o Ahmann Green for the score, and the Packers pulled out to a 31-21 lead with 8:35 remaining. The game or the rally wasn't finished yet. Next Favre directed a six play drive covering 71 yards. Favre hit Driver for 20 yards. Green gained 35 yards on a carry,and finally Favre passed to Ferguson for the score on a 17 yard pass.
