Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers Game Summary
Two huge play's allowed the Green Bay Packers to escape from the jaws of defeat,
and pull out a victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 21-20.
With the packers down 17-7 late in the thrid quarter,
Ahman Green
took the
handoff out of the I-Formation and went untouched to the endzone for
a 63-yard score to cut the deficit to 17-14. Then after Marin Gramatica
kicked a 49-yard field goal to make it 20-14, the Packer Defense forced the
Buccaneers to punt with 3:03 left in the forth quarter. The Packers
Allen Rossum then fielded the punt at the Green Bay 45-yard line, and took
it to the House. These two plays allowed the Packers to overcome a dismal
performance by quarterback
Brett Favre.
THE OFFENSE
The Green Bay Offense sputtered like a 74' Ford Pinto! Tom Rossley has got to
get rid of the shotgun. I think Cris Collonsworth of FOX said it best, "They
(The Packers) start the year this year handing the ball to
Ahman Green.
Things are going great.
Brett Favre is playing great football. Then all of a
sudden, the last three weeks, they are in the shotdun formation on first down,
second down. I have no idea what they are doing.
Ahman Green is one of the
great players in this game. Go behind center. Hand him the ball. Play
action off of it... and this team can go a long way in the playoffs. But
not with the style they have been playing." WOW! Mr. Collinsworth, could
you please call Tom Rossley and tell Him! I could not have said this any more
clearly. Is it any wonder
Ahman Green's 63-yard touchdown run came out of the
I-Formation. Even if you took away
Ahman's 63-yard run, he still had 135
yards on 18 carries. This was against one of the best run defenses in the
league. Just give the man the Ball! Enough Said!
THE DEFENSE
The Packer defense really came to play. Every time the Packers play Tampa,
Mike Allstott seems to break off a long run late in the game. Well there
was none of that in this game. The Packer run defense was stellar, in holding
the Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn combination to 35 yards on 20 carries for
an average of 1.8 yards a carry. This is where it all begins for the
defense. Stop the run, and then let the Dogs Out! This is exactly what the Packers
did, chasing down Brad Johnson for seven sacks. This team is not great at rushing
the passer unless they stop the run first. Ed Donatell also used a much more
aggressive blitzing scheme, that had John Thierry dropping in coverage, and LeRoy
Butler going untouched to the quarterback. The Buccaneers had no idea where the
Blitz was coming from, and you can thank our genious defensive coordinator,
Ed Donatell.
One player that had a great game was Mike McKenzie. This kid is really
everything you could want in a corner, great cover skills and great at run
support. McKenzie came up big on a second and 13 at the Buccaneers 9,
when Brad Johnson hit Mike Alstott in the flat, and McKenzie came up and made
a textbook tackle. Alstott is an OX, and McKenzie took him down the way you have
to, by wrapping him up at the ankles. Also, McKenzie made an acrobatic deflection
of a Johnson pass to Keyshawn Johnson in the endzone. McKenzie is great at looking
back for the ball, which is extremly important for a corner. All the speed in the
world does nothing for you if you don't look for the ball. Just ask Terrell
Buckly, who could run with any receiver, but never the less was beaten when he
failed to look back for the ball.
One last note about the defense. Did anyone see or hear about Tyrone Williams in
this game? No, and thats because people are staying away from him. People
can say what they want about his tackling or toughness, but this guy is a cover
corner, and a very good one. Besides quarterback, this is the hardest position
to play in the NFL, and Williams does it very well. Week in and week out he
faces the likes of Randy Moss, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson, Johnny Morton,
Marcus Robinson, and thats just the NFC Central.
Well, Well, Well. Now it comes down to the Packers and the Bears for the
division lead. The Bears have gotten very lucky in a couple of games, in
grinding out a 6-1 record. Well they have not faced a well balanced team
like the Green Bay packers. And the Packers will show this on Sunday, with a
24-10 Victory! That's the way I saw it! BigE
