Headline: Packers Beat The Bears= Force First Place Tie in NFC Central Game MVP: Brett Favre--19 of 32 for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns Offensive Player of the Game: Bill Schroeder--- 4 receptions for 100 yards and 1 touchdown Defensive Player of the Game: Darren Sharper
Sorry Chicago Bear's fans..... there was no miracle on the midway
finish this week for your team. Leading 20-12 late in the fourth quarter,
the Packer defense came up with big plays, including several from
Darren Sharper
to preserve a Packer victory, and put the Packers into a FIRST PLACE tie
with the
Chicago Bears at 6-2.
For the first half of the opening quarter, the
Bears appeared ready
to manhandle the Packers and send them home with a defeat. The
Bears took the opening kick, and held onto the ball for over
seven minutes. On the first two plays of the game, Anthony Thomas had gains
of 10 and 13 yards. Then starting quarterback Jim Miller passed to Thomas
for a gain of 14 yards. The drive continued, as the
Bears converted on successive third down plays. The drive eventually
stalled out, and the Bears settled for a 37 yard field goal from
Paul Edinger to make it 3-0.
The Packers offense and
Brett Favre did not fare as well on their opening drive of the day.
Initally,
Ahman Green carried for a gain of 14 yards. Several plays later,
Favre went to pass on a third and ten, the pass was overthrown
intended for Dorsey Levens, and it was intercepted by Mike Brown
at the 40. The Packer defense rose to the occassion for the
first of many times on the day against the
Bear's offense and
held them in-check. Edinger was called upon again, and kicked
a 47 yard field goal which gave the
Bears a 6-0 lead with 1:30 remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Packer defense forced a turnover.
Miller completed a short pass to Darren Shelton. Shelton was hit hard
by
Sharper, the ball popped loose and Bernardo Harris recovered it,
giving the Packers a first down at the 45. Again... the Packer
offense sputtred a little.
Green gained 8 on a play, and
Favre passed to David Martin for a pick-up of 10. From there unfortunatly
nothing happened,as
Favre threw incomplete to
Freeman, and then
Favre was forced to throw one away under heavy pressure.
Ryan Longwell came on,and ended his drought by kicking a 40
yard field goal to make it 6-3. On the next series,
the Bears would go three plays and out. The Packers next drive
started at the 13. For awhile, it appeared that Favre would guide
them into the endzone. A pass to Schroeder gained 17 yards;
on first down at the 30, Green carried for a BIG gain
of 25 yards. Favre then completed passes to Freeman of
16 and 14 yards. Then Green carried again, on first and ten at
the 15. Unfortunatly, Green fumbled, the Bears recovered and
the drive ended. However...... once again the Packer defense
stopped the Bears as Sharper read a play perfectly and blitzed
hard on a third and two. He tackled Thomas for a seven yard loss,
and forced them to punt. On the first two plays, Favre hit
Martin for short yardage gains. Later... Favre rolled out on
a play action fake, he had plenty of time, he found Schroeder
racing down the sideline..... Favre threw the pass to Schroeder,
who beat the Bear safety and caught the 41 yard pass in the corner
of the endzone for the touchdown. Longwell added the p.a.t. and the
Packers took a 10-6 lead with 46 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bears
would storm back strong before the half ended. On a third down play, the Bears
completed an option play pass for an 18 yard gain. Eventually Edinger would
kick a 42 yard field goal as time expired making it 10-9 at halftime.
The teams would exchange field position with punts on their initial rives of the
second half. However.... on the Packers second possession of the third quarter,
the score would change. Favre passed to Schroeder for a gain of 23 yards. On
the next play...Schroeder caught another pass for a 19 yard gain. on a third
and one play...Fvare tossed to William Henderson out of the backfield and he
gained 19 yards. From there... Favre guided his team in for the score,
as he passed to Antonio Freeman on a second and goal from the nine for the
touchdown. Following the point after from Longwell it was now 17-9.
The Bears would strike back before the quarter ended, taking advantage of a few
Packer Defensive errors, however eventually the drive stalled again as the Packer
defense blitzed Miller and forced him to drop on a loose ball. Edinger came on and
kicked a 41 yard field goal to draw the Bears closer at the end of the quarter at 17-12.
In the fourth quarter, the Packers would again extend the lead, going a ten play-69
yard drive. Green started the drive by gaining 15 yards on a pass. Later following
a penalty, Favre was faced with a third and 13.... Favre avoided a heavy pass rush
and threw to Freeman for a 32 yard gain. Next.... Favre threw again to Henderson out
of the backfield and he gained 24 yards down to the 14. From there the
drive stalled out,and Longwell came in and kicked a 31 yard field goal to make
the score 20-12. At this point, there were still over nine minutes remaining.
The Bears would get the ball two more times to try and mount still another miracle
comeback victory. Things got sticky on the their second try. Following a Packer
punt, the Bears started at the 20. Miller passed to Booker for a gain of 25.
Miller and Booker hooked up again on the drive on a fourth and three to
keep it going. But eventually the Bears ran out of miracle plays, and Miller
was forced to throw a bad pass by the Packer defense later on a fourth and five.
The Packers took over at the 15 with :35 left and ran out the clock.
FINAL SCORE: PACKERS 20 Bears 12
Packers become the first NFC Central team to win a road game this year at a
division opponents stadium.
With the victory, the Packers are now 6-2 and tied with Chicago for FIRST PLACE.
