Different season..... Same Metro Dome.... Same result.... The Vikings did not waste any time sending a message to the Packers on Sunday, as they took the game's opening drive in for a score.Cambell gained 12 yards from the start on an end around. Culpepper then threw to Byron Chamberlin for a gain of 20. A few plays later, Chamberlin broke one open for a gain of 18. A Packer penalty eventually gave the Vikings the ball at the 25. On first down, Culpepper avoided a heavy rush and passed to Randy Moss for the touchdown. Anderso added the extra point and it was 7-0. The Packers first series resulted in a punt after just three plays. Minnesota took over at the 35. Culpepper threw a pass on third and three that was incomplete, but Tyronne Williams was called for pass interference to keep their drive alive. Culpepper then passed to Moss for a gain of 24, down to the 28. Culpepper then gained 8 yards down to the 20. On the next play, Culpepper hit Bates on a screen pass which went for the touchdown, giving Minnesota a 14-0 lead with just under seven minutes left in the opening quarter.
Through the first portion of the second quarter, the teams traded field positions with punts. Later, the Packers had a drive that started at the 29. Favre threw to Glenn for a gain of 19, which then gained another 15 yards folowing a penalty on Minnesota. On a third and 21, Favre threw again for Glenn, but this time he was intercepted by Jack Brewer. On first down at the 42, Culpepper's pass was intercepted right back by Marques Anderson, setting up a first down at the 37. Favre passed to Glenn for a gain of 16. Two penalties against the Vikings eventually put the Packers at the 17. Green took control from there, and got the Packers a first and goal at the five. Two plays later, he scored the touchdown to make it 14-7 as the first half closed.
The Packers were unable to carry over the momentum f the late first half score into the opening drive of the third quarter. Just three plays and a punt. The Vikings took over for their first rive of the second half at the 20. Culpepper began picking apart the Packer's defense. On a third and nine, he scrambled and hit Bates for a gain of 23 yards. Next former BADGER Michael Bennett gained 12 yards down to the 7. Culpepper then carrried the ball on the next two plays for the score, increasing the lead for the Vikings to 21-7. Favre and the Packers bounced back on the next drive. Green gained 34 yards o a shot gun draw. Tyronne Davis caught a pass for 25 yards, getting the Packers down to the five. Eventually, Favre passed to Franks for a 1 yard score,which capped off an 8 play=72 yard drive making the score 21-14.
In the fourth quarter, the Packers would tie the game as Favre passed to Driver for an 83 yard touchdown. Longwell added the extra point, and the game was tied at 21-21 with 11:55 remaining. The Vikings came right back. On the ensuing kick, Moe Wiliams returned it 52 yards, and then theywere further aided on a 15 yard penalty against Robert Ferguson for grabbing the facemask. Bennett had a few runs for gains, but eventually the drive stalled. Gary Anderson kicked a 32 yard field goal giving Minnesota a 24-21 lead with 7:15 left. The Packers next two drives resulted in a punt after just three plays. The Vikings iced the game and their victory on the next to last drive in the game. Culpepper kept the drive alive,and at the same time, kept Favre off the field, when he scrambled for a gain of six on a third and two. On the next play, former Badger Michael Bennett, sealed the Packers fate, as he gained 64 yards down to the four. Two plays later, Moe Willams scored the touchdown with 1:56 remaining to make the FINAL SCORE
