Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Atlanta Falcons Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers had a chance to get on a nice roll, in what would be considered
the softer part of the schedule, but instead they bumbled their way to a 23-20 defeat
to the Atlanta Falcons. The most disappointing thing about the way the Packers lost, was the
way Brett Favre played. It was alarming that way Favre was as careless with the ball, as
a rookie quarterback. This is just not acceptable. Favre was seen after one of his
three picks, calling for Bill Schroeder to come back for the ball. Schroeder has to work
harder coming back to this quarterback, but the bottom line is that Favre can not turn the
ball over. How many times have you seen turnovers allow the worst NFL teams compete with
any other team, and there is absolutly no way you can throw that final
interception to end the game. Rumor has it Schroeder let up on the play, but why go for
the home run on this play. I would have taken my chances in overtime against the falcons
at home.
Well it is apparent to me that the Packers glaring weakness is at wide reciever and tight
end. The recievers are just not creating enough space. The Packers are getting nothing
from their back-ups either. Sure Cory Bradford had a decent game, but he is hardly
consistant. The trio of Bradford, Charles Lee, and Donald Driver have been invisible this
season. I think it is now time to bring Robert Ferguson off the bench. What have you got
to lose! Ferguson has got a large upside, and sometimes you just have to let players go
out and make plays. I don't know if they are just not getting open, or if offensive
coordinator Tom Rossley is just not using them. When the Packer offense was in it's prime
during their two Super Bowl runs, the tight end was a very big part of their success.
I don't know if this coaching staff is commited to using the tight end's.
Another glaring weakness of the Packers is their lack of producing a pass rush. This was
evident against the Falcons largely because their less than mobile quarterback
Chris Chandler, was allowed to stand in the pocket and fire bullets all over the
field. Although Chandler is a concussion waiting to happen, he is still a great quarterback
if given time to sit in the pocket. I am a true believer that the game is made up of small
battles, and even the best defenses are going to have some weak moments. There are some
great players in the NFL, and you know nothing about football if you think any defense can keep
these players quiet for an entire game. Without a pass rush the Packers allowed Chandler
to have a great game. But for the most part the Packers defense was good enough to force
field goals, despite giving up 352 yards through the air. The Packers defensive backs
are a pretty talented group, but will not look to good if the front four doesn't start
putting on the heat.
This weeks game produces another new challenge, a team that has absolutly nothing to lose.
That scares the hell out of me. Because the Detroit Lions have an EVIL HEX on the Packers!
The Packers just don't play well in domes. Tom Rossley has got to give it to Ahman Green more
than the paltry 17 times, Green carried the ball against the Falcons. Just once I would
like to see the Packers hand-off to Green 30 times and watch the turf fly. If they do it
will be tough for the Lions to stop them. Packers should take this one by a score of
28-10. And that's the way I saw it!!! BigE
