Headline: Packers Propell Past Carolina for Third Victory Game MVP: Brett Favre--- 25 of 39=308 yards= 3 touchdowns
The Green Bay Packers trailed the Carolina Panthers at halftime on Sunday 7-6, but behind Brett Favre came back in the second half to dominate and outscore the Panthers 22-0 for a 28-7 victory!!
Both teams struggled to get their footing in the first quarter. LITERALLY...... the turf at Ericcson Stadium was in terrible shape. Huge divots came out everywhere, making it almost impossible to gain any yardage on the ground.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the host Panthers got on the board first early in the second quarter. The actual drive started late in the first quarter. Chris Weinke at quarterback directed the scoring effort. First e completed a pass on third and eight to Donald Hayes for 13 yards. Later on a second and nine play,Weinke passed for a gain of 15 which got the Panthers inside the five. Following an incomplete pass, and a fumbled snap exchange, Weinke eventually passed to Wesley Walls for the four yard touchdown. Following the p.a.t. the Panthers led 7-0.
The Packers would eventually get on the board for the first time on the day, with a Lomgwell field-goal. It came about however... courtesy of a Panther miscue. Weinke threw for an apparent 27 yard touchdown to Musshin Muhammad, which would have given them a two touchdown advantage, but it was wiped out on an offensive holding penalty. Later, the Panthers eleted to go for a first down on a fourth and 14, instead of kicking a field-goal, Weinke threw down the sidelines for Muhammed who was wide open....but he dropped the pass. The Packers took over on downs, but were uable to move, so wound up settling for a 42 yard field goal by Longwell, making it 7-3. The Packers would narrow the gap to 7-6 late in the quarter on a 46 yard field goal by Longwell.
The Packers kicked off to Carolina to open the second half, and thats when the ball began to roll the Packers way. Steve Smith would fumble the kick and Antuann Edwards would recover at the 38. Favre went to work immeadiatly. He would complete passes to Bill Schroeder and Bubba Franks. Next Schroeder came down the left side and caught the 12 yard pass for the TOUCHDOWN. The Packers elected to go for two points on the conversion. Favre rolled out right, and tossed to Freeman for the completion. The Packers now led 14-7.
On the ensuing kick-off, Smith would again fumble the ball, and the Packers recovered at the 38. Favre and Ahmann Green connected on the drive for a big gain of 18 yards on a third and 20 play. The Packers took a time-out, came back and went for it, Favre handed off to Green who gained five yards for the first down. Eventually from the six..... Fvare rolled out and found Bubba Franks for a toss completion for the TOUCHDOWN. Longwell added the p.a.t and it was 21-7 Packers.
The Packers would seal up the victory early in the fourth
quarter as they scored on a eight play--- 49 yard drive which concluded when Favre passed to Corey Bradford for the TOUCHDOWN to make it 28-7.
