Headline: Tampa Bay Hands Packers First Loss of Season Defensive Player of the Game: Kabeer Gbaja Biamila-- 3 quarter back SACKS
Brett Favre had a rough day at the office on Sunday. He threw three interceptions, one of which was returned 98 yards for a touchdown...... Bill Schroeder was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the fourth quarter, which killed a potential scoring drive...... the Packer defense was not able to stop the Tampa Bay offense at a crucial time in the fourth quarter, and allowed them to score a touchdown. Add all these factors together, and you have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeating the Green Bay Packers on Sunday 14-10.
Neither team was able to put points on the board in the opening quarter. The Packers started a drive at the 20 in the late first quarter. It had strong potential to be a scoring drive. Favre hit Schroeder for a gain of 25 down the right sideline. On a third and ten.... Ahmann Green gained 18 yards, by breaking several open field tackles. On the final play of the quarter.... Favre ran a bootleg, and passed to David Martin for a gain of 25, down to the 7.
On the opening play of the second quarter... on first and goal, Favre threw for Bubba Franks, the pass was underthrown, and intercepted by Shelton Quarles....Franks tried to tackle him, but Quarles eluded him and dashed away for the touchdown. Gramatica added the p.a.t. and Tampa Bay led 7-0. The Packers would come back later in the quarter to tie the score at 7-7. Favre hooked up with Bill Schroeder, as he saw him open deep inside a Tampa defensive zone, Schroeder eluded the defenders and scored on a 67 yard touchdown pass. Longwell added the p.a.t. and the game was tied 7-7 going into halftime.
The two teams struggled for field position throughout the third quarter. The Packer defense was led by Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila with TWO SACKS on one series. On his second sack, it forced a fumble, which was recovered by John Thierry at the Tampa 22. The Packer offense was not able to move the ball, and eventually settled for a Ryan Longwell 35 yard field goal to give Green Bay a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Packers began to look like they would take control of the game in the fourth quarter. Favre connected with Schroeder for a gain of 20. Bubba Franks would catch a pass for a gain of 8. Then on third and 2.... Ahmann Green ran for a big gainer down to the 32. A reverse play, did not work and actually lost yardage..... but an official threw a flag for unspotsmanlike conduct against Dexter Jackson of Tampa Bay. Initially, this would have given the Packers a first down inside the ten. But Bill Schroeder retaliated by shoving Jackson, and so another official called him for the same penalty. That cost the Packers and forced them to punt. The punt was very good, as it pinned Tampa Bay back at the 5. On the drive... Keyshawn Johnson caught a pass for a gain of 23. Later Reidel Anthony caught a pass on third and six for a 20 yard pick up. Three plays later.... Mike Alstott on a draw play broke through and slammed his way down field 38 yards for a touchdown.Following the kick, Tampa Bay had the lead for good at 14-10.
The Packers and Favre tried to come back. On the next drive, Favre was intercepted by Dexter Jackson as he went deep to Corey Bradford. However.... the defense stopped the Buccanners and forced a punt, giving Favre and the Packers one final shot at victory. The drive started at the 16. Eventually guiding his team out to the 45, Favre threw a screen pass to Ahmann Green which gained 25 yards. Favre worked his magic, and had the Packers in position to win the game down at the 8. But Tampa Bay's defense came up big and sacked Favre to end the game.
With the loss the Packers are now 3-1 on the season.
