Headline: Packers Get Hard Fought Victory at New Ford Field Game MVP: Brett Favre= 31 of 47 passing-357 yards-3 touchdowns
Remember Thanksgiving day 2001? The Packers looked to have had a comfortable 14 point lead over the Lions mid-way through the fourth quarter, but then allowed the Lions to come back,and even gave them a chance to win on the last play? Well..... fast forward to this game, same scenario in a new stadium. The Packers led 34-17, and then allowed Detroit to score two straight touchdowns, to make it 34-31. Even after that, the Packers went up 37-31 on a Longwell field goal, but the Lions came storming back, and had a chance to win the game, but luckily Todd McBride intercepted a potential game winning touchdown pass to help prreserve the Packers second victory on the young season.
The Lions received to start the game.Neither team moved the ball on their first possessions. Josh Bidwell punted his first of the day after just three plays, it traveled 45 yards and was fielded by Eddie Drummond. He immeadiatly reversed and handed the ball to Az-Zahir Hakim who raced down open sidelines 72 yards for the score. Hanson added the p.a.t. and the Lions grabbed the early lead at 7-0. The Packer offense was slow getting started, and punted again on their next drive. The Lions had a third and 4, Harrington threw for Hakim, the ball was tipped by a Packer, it bounced into the arms of Marques Anderson, who ran it 78 yards for the touchdown. Longwell added the p.a.t. and the game was tied at 7-7.
The Packers next score would look inmpressive, as Favre drove his team 82 yards in 10 plays, on a drive that closed out the first quarter and opened the second quarter with the touchdown. A key play on the drive, was when the Packers had a third and 7, Favre threw to Donald Driver for a gain of 19, giving the Packers a first down at the 26. On the first play of the second quarter, Favre threw to Driver for a 21 yard touchdown. Longwell added the point after and it was 14-7. The Lions struck back on their next drive courtesy of a Favre interception. Chris Claiborn intercepted the ball and returned it 43 yards down to the 10. The Packer defense held their ground,and the Lions settled for a Jason Hanson 33 yard field goal to make it 14-10. On the Packers next drive, Favre would engineer a 12 play drive. On a third and six, Favre passed to Glenn for 23 yards. Later Favre hit Glenn for another gain, this one for 13 yards on third and 10. The Lions defense hit down hard, and the Packers settled for a Logwell 46 yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-10.
Detroit would strike back before the half closed. Harrington led the Lions on a quick 4 play drive following a 31 kick return. On third down at the 39, Harrington passed to Lamont Warren who beat out Antuan Edwards and scored the touchdown. Hanson's kick was good, and the game was tied 17-17.
The Packers received the kick to start the second half, and Javon Walker returned it 39 yards. Najae Davenport ha two nice runs for positive yardage including one for 11. The Packers worked the ball inside the 10. On third and goal from the 8,, Favre passed to Robert Ferguson for the touchdown. It capped off a 12 play-72 yard drive and made the score 24-17. Later in the quarter,the Packers would extend the lead, following an interception by Mike McKenzie, which gave the Packers the ball at the 40. After a few plays and a penalty, the Packers faced a third and 9, Favre passed to Ferguson for a 37 yard gain.On first and goal at the 9, Favre passed to Bubba Franks for the touchdown. Longwell added the p.a.t. and it became a 31 -17 lead. The Packer defense shut down Detroit on the next series,and took over at the 38, as the third drew t a close. Before it did, Favre passed to Davenport for a gain of 12. The drive ended about four minutes into the fourth quarter, with Longwell kicking a 35 yard field goal to make it seem comfortble at 34-17.
But on the Lions next drive, Larry Foster returned the kick-off 55 yards. From there, Harringon took advantage of some Packer mistakes and driove down field. Eventually Cory Schlessinger scored from the 1 and with the p.a.t. it was 34-24. The Lions stopped the Packers next drive, and took over following a deep punt at the 5. Eventually, the ions worked it out to the 40, and on fourth and 3, converted thanks to a Packer penalty. Next..... Harrington passed to James Stewart on a screen pass, and Stewart took it 52 yards for the touchdown. The p.a.t. wa successful, and now the Lions ad the momentum trailing just by 3 at 34-31 with 1:37 left. The Packers stormed back strong on the next drive, and cushioned the lead to 37-31 on a 47 yard field goal by Longwell. Detroit threatened big on the game's last drive, bu it eventually ended as Todd McBride intercepted a Harrington pass.
