Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Detroit Lions Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers exercised the evil hex in the
Siverdome, despite a last second collapse,
to beat Detroit 29-27. The Packers looked less than stellar in defeating a team that is
far from being even a decent team. Still the Silverdome has been a nightmare of a place for
the Packers to play. The Packers managed to play well enough to take a reasonable lead,
but slipped into a coma late in the game and hung on by the skin of their teeth.
I really believe that defensive coordinator Ed Donatell has been reluctant to let the
Defense blitz as much as in the past. He seems more confident the Defense can get to the
quarterback with the front four. Truth be told, the Packers were better defensively when he
was usint the zone blitz to apply pressure. Donatell is a great coach, and will make the
necessary adjustments.
THE OFFENSE
The best thing about this game was the fact that
Brett Favre played mistake free football.
Favre was 18 of 26 for 252 yards, and two touchdowns. But the most important stat was that
he did not turn the ball over. That is really the difference in the game. The Packer
recievers are not getting open enough, so it is important for Favre not to force things.
It is also very important that the coaching staff realize that, without the recievers being
able to create space, the running game is a must. The Packers have a great quarterback so
they plan on using him. But you must control the clock in the
NFL, and the Packers have a
gifted running back that can do that. Yes
Ahman Green's fumbles worry me, but he is a threat
to hit a home run on any given play. Not only that, he really grinds out some nice runs
when there seems to be nothing there. This kid has got game!
Green punished the
Lions for
22 carries for 102 yards. He also caught two passes, including a 35 yard touchdown on a
screen. This shows how well rounded a back
Green has become. Again, I will tell you he
still needs to carry the ball more. Someday Offensive Coordinator Tom Rossley will wake up
and smell the Pay-Dirt!
THE DEFENSE
The young rookie
Bhawoh Jue had his coming out party. The kid played a good game. Jue came up real big
as the Lions were well on their way to scoring on their first drive, when the rook came out
of nowhere to knock the ball out of Johnnie Morton's hands and into the endzone for a
touchback. As much as the Packers miss LeRoy Butler, he wouldn't have been able to catch
Johnnie Morton as Jue did. That does not mean that LeRoy Butler's experience would not have
put him in position to make more play's than Jue. Still Jue has some excellent tools
including two you can't teach, and thats speed and toughness. I was happy with the way he
came up and hit recievers after the catch. This rookie produced admirably, something the
Packers only wished they could get out of some of the other rookies.
Mike McKenzie played the way we have come to expect from this future pro-bowler. He was
out there again running with recievers as if he were in the offensive huddle. I really can't
think of another corner in the
NFL that I would take over this kid. Sure that's tough talk,
but McKenzie just goes out there and makes plays. All while smiling the whole time. You
can't have enough players who generally love the games the way this guy does. It's a pleasure
to watch him!
The Packers now get a much needed, long rest. This should serve them well in
Jacksonville. This is still going to be a very tough game, that will show weather
the Packers are contenders or pretenders. My prediction, Packers will win a tight one
24-21. Ant that's the way I saw it! BigE
