Headline: Robert Jones signing
Packers Add Depth at Linebacker
The Green Bay Packers added some needed depth at linebacker by signing
Robert Jones to a one-year contract. A source close to negotiations said
Jones's deal was one year at the veteran's minimum of $750,000 per year.
Jones, 32, plays all three linebacker positions and has three
Super Bowl rings
from his years with the
Dallas Cowboys. Jones also had stints in
St. Louis Rams,
Miami Dolphins, and last
season played for the
Washington Redskins. Jones stands 6 feet 1 inch and weighs 246 pounds.
Small for a middle linebacker, Jones makes up for his lack of size by
ranging from sideline to sideline.
In mini-camp the Packers have had no one to back up Torrance Marshall in
the middle, and Jones will provide some good competition. Marshall is a
great athlete that is still learning the system, and signing a veteran
like Jones will only help the young linebackers progress.
The signing of Jones does not mean the Packers won't pursue Hardy
Nickerson if he becomes available after June 1. It appears the Packers
will release Antonio Freeman for salary cap reasons on June 1, and that
will free up some money to make a run at Nickerson. The Packers seem to
be doing everything to fill the small gaps they might have in a team that
finished 12-4 in 2001.
