He had every serious intention to play his entire career with his in-state NFL team the Green Packers. On Thursday, Schroeder, the Sheboygan native signed a four year contract with the Detroit Lions. Schroeder was drafted by the the Packers initially in the sixth round back in 1994. He spent that season as a member of the practice squad. In 1995, he was traded to New England. A year later he was waved, and was re-signed to the Packers practice squad. In 1997, the Packers sent him to the Rhein Fire of the World League to improve his skills. Later in 1999, he was signed to a three year contract. His best season as a Packer was in 1999, when he had 74 catches for 1051 yards and 5 touchdowns. While he was criticzed for his drop in production the last two years, in 2001 he still managed 53 catches for 918 yards and 9 touchdowns.
