Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Oakland Raiders Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers completed the Pre-Season with a 2-2 record,
after losing to the
Oakland Raiders 13-24. As I've said before,
pre-season games are nothing more than a chance for the younger players to learn
the system. This game did nothing to dispell that theory. Coach Mike
Sherman pulled quarterback
Brett Favre after only 2 series, and then pulled seven starters on the
defensive side, after 2 series.
The defense looked extremely poor in allowing 391 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown
run by Tyrone Wheatly. On this play Wheatly ran off right tackle and cut back across
the field, avoiding Tyrone Williams feeble attempt at a tackle, and out-ran LeRoy
Butler to the Endzone. What made this so disapointing was the fact that the Packers
had only given up three runs of 30 or more yards last year. The Packers need to stop
the run to give this team a chance to win. Nothing is more demoralizing to a defense
than having their opponents stuff the ball down their throats.
On the offense side of the ball, there is not much to talk about. If this was a
regular season game, you could bet
Ahman Green, Dosey Levens, and
Antonio Freeman would have been on the field. The absence of these starters
allowed some of the younger players to shine. Corey Bradford blazed past Oakland
cornerback Eric Allen to catch a bomb from
Favre, and eluded safety Anthony Dorsett for an 87-yard touchdown. Henry Buris,
the Packers number three quarterback, saw his first extensive playing time of the
pre-season. Burris showed good poise and a rocket arm, in going 13 of 24 for 170
yards. Though he failed to get the Packers offense into the endzone, Burris showed
he is more than capable of being a back up quarterback in the NFL. Then there was
Robert Ferguson, this is a kid who was trashed by most media outlets. In this
game however,
Ferguson showed a glimpse of what to expect from him in the near future.
Ferguson caught three passes for 59 yards, including a 40 yard pass from Burris
in which he jumped between two defenders. This kid has a bright future!
Well, we are 1 week away from the regular season, and there are still a lot of
question marks. Who is going to step up on the defensive line, and provide the pass
rush the Packers so desperatly need? I want to take this time to tell you how great
a defensive coordinator Ed Donatell is! He will give the Packers defense a boost with
his blitzing scheme. Donatell is truely one of the brightest, most underated defensive
coordinatores in the game. With him calling the shots for the defense, quarterbacks
better have eyes in the back of their heads. That's the way I saw it... BigE.
