Headline: Green Bay Packers vs St. Louis Rams Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers were embarrassed by the St. Louis
Rams 45-17, in front of a capacity crowd of 66,338, at the
dome at America's Center. What really made this a bitter
pill to swallow is that the Packer Defense was outstanding.
The Defense gave up only 292 total yards to the NFL's most prolific Offenses. This
was the lowest total yardage the Rams have had all season. But the Packers had a
miserable day on Offense, turning the ball over 8 times. Three of Brett Favre's six
picks were taken to the house. The Rams proved to be the better team on Sunday, but
turning the ball over 8 times will lose the game against any team let alone the deadly
Rams. There is no sense in bashing Favre, he is the heart and soul of this team.
This game was one of his most forgettable games to remember. This game is going to stick
in the Packers craw, for what will be a very long offseason.
The Offense
The Packer offense proved they could move the ball against the NFL's 2 rated defense.
It's hard to say the Packers didn't give Ahman Green the ball enough, because they
were down 14 points going into the second half. Green carried the ball 16 times
for 94 yards, for an astounding 5.9 yards per carry. Green is very explosive on
artificial turf, and it showed on his 49 yard run in the third quarter. The Packers
turned the ball over so many times, Green was not able to get more touches to be a major
factor. Still, Green put the ball on the ground in the first quarter when the Packers
were still in the game. I don't know what causes these fumbles for Green, but like
Favre, Green's positives easily outweigh his negatives.
The Packers still managed to rack up 383 total yards. This statistic is somewhat
clouded byt the fact that the Rams defense scored three times, putting the Packer
offense right back on the field. Favre threw some ill-advised passes, but by the end
of the game, the Rams defense was able to benifit from a few tipped passes. This is
when the Packers luck ran out. Favre had to have been stunned by the unlucky tipped
passes, as they went right to the defenders.
The thing that bothered me the most about the offense was that, with the Packers
down 38-10 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter, the Packers felt they had time
to huddle up after every play. This to me, was as good ast waving a white flag and
giving up. You have nothing to lose, so run the hurry up offense and try to get
soe points on theboard quickly.
The Defense
This group played a great game. What more needs to be said, the defense gave up
292 total yards to an offensed that may be the NFL's best ever. The Rams did make
some play's offense, but they have a boatload of track stars. First and foremost,
the defense stopped Marshall Faulk cold. Faulk finished with 129 total yards,
but the Packers made sure tackles to stop the league's most dynamic running back.
Faulk did make a few big plays, but for the most part, the defense held him
in check.
The Packers defense held up their bargin, and this gave the Packers a chance in this
game. The defense played so well in coverage, Kurt Warner had trouble going through
his reads. Warner was flushed from the pocket several times, and thats because
the coverage was so good. The Packers defense had to be disappointed that the offense
squandered all the opportunities that were provided. The Rams punted five times in the
game. That had to be some kind of record.
The Packers have played better games, and you can bet Favre is going to come out next
year with the same fire in his eyes, that made him a three time MVP. The Packers
have a lot of good young talent, locked up with contracts that will keep the Nucleus
around for a few more years. The big thing now is to find the Chris Chambers of the
next NFL draft. If the Packers have a good draft, and their young players don't get
complacent, they should be able to make that next step next season. This team will be
a force next year. This team will be a force next year! And that's the way I saw
it.....
