Headline: Packers RUSH for a Victory over 49'ers Offensive Player of the Game: Ahmann Green= 27 carries-154 yards Defensive Player of the Game: Antuan Edwards= 1 interception- 1 QB Sack
On a wet day when the status of Brett Favre's thumb was still unknown, the Packer running game to life and propelled a victory. Led by Ahmann Green's 154 ards on 27 carries, the Packers rushed with the ball a total of 48 times for 243 yards. Meanwhile, the defense held the 49'ers to just 192 yards total offense on route to a 20-10 victory.
The Packer defense stopped the 49'ers initial drive of the day, only giving up one first down. Following a punt, the Packers began the day on offense at the 29. The first two plays to Green netted just five yards. On third and five at the 34, Favre lofted a pass down field to Javon Walker, he caught in stride at about the 30 and ran for the touch down strike of 66 yards. Longwell added the p.a.t. and it was 7-0. Neither team scored on their next possessions, San Francisco QB Rattay was sacked two times to force a punt. Then on the Packers drive, Favre was intercepted by Zach Bronson, which set the 49'ers up in good field position at the 20. On a third and goal at the 10, Rattay was sacked by K.Gbaja Biamilia, to set up fourth and goal. Todd Peterson came in to kick a 28 yard field goal, which was NO GOOD as it hit the left upright.
The Packers would extend the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on a 10 play-80 yard drive. On first down, Green gained 13 yards. He followed that up with runs of 3 and 6 yards. A few plays later, Davenport gained 25 yards down to the 27. Favre then passed to Driver for 7 yards down to the 16. Two plays later, Favre hooked up with Robert Ferguson for a 16 yard touch down pass for the 14-0 lead.
San Francisco would finally get on the score board on their next drive. Hearst carried two times for gains of 2 and 9 yards. Rattay then passed to Ty Sheets for a gain of 10 yards down to the 33. Next, Rattay connected with Weaver for a gain of 14 down to the 19. Eventually the Packer defense stopped the drive, and Peterson converted on a 24 yard field goal to make it 14-3 with two minutes left until half time.
That was more than enough time for Faver to direct a scoring drive. Green gained 24 yards on second and four down to the 26. Fvare was sacked for a two yard loss on the next play. Favre used his bank of three time outs to allow Longwell to come in with 4 seconds left and kick a 38 yard field goal to make it 17-3 at the half.
The teams traded field position with punts for the majority of the third quarter. San Francisco scored the only points of the quarter, after their defense intercepted a Favre pass to give them the ball at the 29. On second and 10, Hearst gained 22 yards down to the 31. Rattay then threw two incomplete passes, to set up a fourth and three at the 24. Rattay passed to Owens for the touch down and with the p.a.t. it was a close game at 17-10 as the third quarter closed.
The Packers increased the lead about midway through the fourth quarter, as Longwell kicked a 37 yard field goal, which gave the Packers a ten point advantage at 20-10. San Francisco tried to storm back, but on their next drive, their drive back was denied as Antwann Edwards intercepted a pass from Rattay to give the Packers the ball at the 48 with 6:08 remaining. From that point, Favre directed the offense to three sets of first downs, and the Packers were able to run the clock out, with Favre taking a knee on the final three plays.
