The Packers avoided what could have been a turkey bone choker on Thursday afternoon, as they hung on for 29-27 victory over the Detroit Lions.
The Packers first score of the day, was set up courtesy of the defense. Batch thre to Johnny Morton for an initial gain of 45 yards, however, as he continued to run down field, Bhawoh Jue came from behind and knocked the ball loose, it rolled out of the back of the endzone to give Green Bay a first down at the 20. Ahmann Green started out with a 15 yard gain. Following a Lions facemask,the Packers had a first down at the 48. Favre then threw to Schroeder for a gain of 20. Ahmann Green concluded the drive with a 26 yard touchdown. Longell added the point after and it was 7-0. The Lions would come back on their next possession and score a field goal of 33 yard from Jason Hanso to make it 7-3.
The Lions drew to within one early in the second quarter, after Hanso made a 54 yard field goal. On the Packers next drive, Favre would hit Bubba Franks for a gain of 12. Later Schroeder missed a pass, but he complained and the official saw it his way, and called pass interference on the Lions. From there despite gaining a first down, the drive stalled and Longwell came in to kick a 46 yard field goal to give Green Bay a 10-6 lead. The Lions would claim the lead shortly after that. Detroit blitzed and sacked Favre for a loss, as Favre was going down, the ball fell loose and was recovered by Detroit's James Hall, who returned it for a quick touchdown. Following the extra point from Hanson,the Lions led 13-10. The Packers would come back to regain the lead before the half ended on a nine play- 81 yard drive. Favre passed to Freeman for 18 yards. Following a roughing the passer penalty on Detroit, Favre again hit Freeman for a gain. Green gained 10. Eventually, Favre hit David Martin on a second and goal at the two with a pass for the touchdown.
Longwell added the point after, and it was 17-13 at the half.
In the third quarter, Favre and the offense again got on the board courtesy of the defense. Nate Wayne intercepted a pass to give Green Bay a first down at the 46. Favre conected with Schroeder for a gain of 13. The Lions missed a coverage and Favre connected with Green for a 35 yard touchdown and a 24-13 lead. The teams traded punts and field position to end the third quarter.
The Packers extended the margin and appeared headed for an easy victory when it became 26-13 early in the fourth after a safety. Following the free kick by Detroit, Green Bay took over at the 30. On first down, Favre bootlegged to the left and hit Franks for a 32 yard gain. Green rushed twice for two yards. Then Favre hit Freeman for a gain of 17 yards. The drive stalled out, and Longwell came to kick a 39 yard field goal and make it 29-13 with just over seven minutes remianing.
The Lions stormed back next on a 18 play-- 71 yard drive for a touchdown. On the extra point, the Lions went for two and converted to make it 29-21. Following the score, on the kick, Detroit kicked an on-sides ball, which they recovered at the 31. The Lions hit paydirt on fourth down as McMahon hit his receiver in the back of the endzone. Following a pair of time-outs by each team,the Lions again elected to go for two and the tie. McMahon rolled right under heavy pressure, initially he had an open lane into the endzone, but he passed it up and wound up throwing an incomplete pass. A flury of a comeback!!!! Fortunatly for the Packers it fell short and they win 29-27.
With the victory, the Packers are now 7-3 on the season. They have swept the 2001 season series from Detroit.
