For the better portion of the game on Sunday, The Green Bay Packers appeared to have been headed for their second straight victory over an undefeated team. The Packers built up a 17 point lead after three quarters 31-14, bu two costly turnovers on offense, resulted in the Chiefs claiming a 40-34 victory in overtime.
The Packers opened the game and dominated the Chiefs. The opening drive covered 80 yards in 12 plays and used the first 6:30 of the opening quarter. Ahmann Green was hot and fast out of the box. On a fourth and 1 at the 41, Green burst open for a 7 yard gain to keep the drive alive. Next, Favre passed to Ferguson on a play fake which gained 24 yards. Later, Favre hit Henderson for a ten yard gain down to the 1. Favre wrapped up the drive, tossing a touch down pass to Bubba Franks and a 7-0 lead. The Packers increased the lead on their next drive. Again it was Favre directing a flawless drive both on the ground and in the air. Green initially gained 15 yards on a screen pass. Next on a counter play, Green gained 14 yards. Favre would then connect with Wesley Walls for a 36 yard gain down to the 5. On the next play, Green swept around the right side for the touch down. Logwell added the extra point and the Packers were rolling with a 14-0 lead with 2;30 left in the opening quarter. The Chiefs put themselves right back into the game on their next drive.Green directed an 80 yard-six play drive highlghted by a 27 yard touch down pass to Tony Gonzalez, which narrowed the gap to 14-7 as the first quarter closed.
Early in the second, the Packers were forced to punt. Dante Hall appeared to be on his way for a touch down, but Josh Bidwell made a diving tackle to stop his return. Green stayed on track from the first quarter, and directed a touch down drive in eight plays to tie the game at 14-14. The Packers would next control the game clock for over seven minutes. On a third and 15, Favre passed a bullet to Javon Walker for a gain of 26. Several plays later on a third and 6, Favre avoided the rush and blitz and completed a pass to Robert Ferguson for 14 yards. Then Favre passed to Tony Fisher for 13 yards. Finally, on third and 6 at the 11, Favre tossed a screen pass to Green,who plowed over several defenders for the touch down, giving Green Bay a 21-14 lead at half time.
The Packers opened the third quarter on another successful scoring drive. Not one time on the drive, did they face a third down conversion. Najeh Davenport would score the touch down with 10:45 remaining and after Longwell added the p.a.t. it was 28-14. The defense shut down Kansas City's next drive, allowing Favre and the offense to return in short fashion. Favre connected on several key passes, and eventually cleared the way for Longwell to come in and boot a 50 yard field goal to give the Packers a presumed safe lead of 31-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth, the Chiefs began their come back victory. Hall returned a punt 35 yards down to the 43. Green came alive, first he hit Gonzalez for a gain of 18, then he passed to Priest Holmes for 17 yards.Holmes eventually scored the touch down to draw the Chiefs to within ten at 31-21. The Packers committed their first of two costly turnovers on the next drive. Faced with a third and six, Favre passed for Driver, but it was intercepted as it slid off his fingers by Woods, who then raced 79 yards for the touch down. Anderson added the p.a.t. to shorten the gap to 31-28. The Chiefs tied the score on their next possession. Folowing a Packers punt, on first down, Green passed to Gonzalez for a huge gain of 67 yards down to the 13. The Chiefs were penalized five yards for a false start,and the drive stalled out after two incomplete passes. Anderson kicked a 34 yard field goal to tie the game at 31-31 with 5:40 remaining. The Packers struck back on the next drive and regained the lead at 34-31 on a 41 yard field goal by Longwell. The Chiefs then took over with 2;35 remaining. On the first play, Cletius Hunt was penalized 15 yards for holding onto Holmes. A few plays later, Green kept it alive passing to Derick Holmes for a gain of 15 on third and nine. Holmes again would catch a key pass later on a third and 3 for a 12 yard gain down to the four. The Chiefs threatned to win the game, but two passes from Green were incomplete. Andersen then came in and kicked a 31 yard field goal to tie the game at 34-34 and send it into over time.
In the over time, Kansas City took the ball first, and drove into scoring position. Andersen came in to attempt a field goal, and it was BLOCKED,giving the Packers a first down. On the first down play, Favre handed off to Ahmann Green who ran for an eight yard gain, but unfortuatly then fumbled as he was hit, the Chiefs recoverd at the 49. On first down, Green passed down field to Kennison and hit him for a completion. Kennison beat Bau Jue and scored the game winning 51 yard touch down pass to make the FINAL SCORE:
