The Packers knew their backs were up against the wall comming into the game Monday night. They knew they had to play much better than they did in the loss to Arizona last week. And what the heck...... if they couldn't get a win a few weeks ago in the Lambeau Field, they sure as heck were not going to allow those Bears to celebrate their new Soldier Field with a victory.
After trading punts on each of their first drives, the Packers went to scoring on their second drive of the night. On first down, Favre passed to Walker for a gain on five. On the next play, Favre handed off to Green who broke an initial tackel attempt, and Green raced down the field 63 yards for the score.Longwell added the p.a.t. and it was 7-0. The Packers would extend the lead to 10-0 on the next drive. On third and five, Favre kept the drive alive as he passed to Driver for a gain of 20. Next he assed to Walker for a gain of 14, down to the 28. Green then gained 11 yards down to the 17. The drive stalled out, and Longwell kicked a field goal of 34 yards for the 10-0 lead. The defense contributed to the Packers next score, after the Bears failed to move the ball and were forced to punt. Marquis Wilkins came in from the off right tackle side to BLOCK the punt, which the Packers recovered at the 20. On first down, Favre hit Franks for a 14 yard gain down to the 6. On the next play, Green burst threw a hole and scored the touchdown. Longwell added the extra point, and the Packers looked ready to blow out the Bears leading 17-0 as the first quarter closed out.
Early in the second quarter, Chicago got their first points of the night, thanks to an interception thrown by Favre, and returned by Mike Green. Cordell Stweart momentarily kept the drive alive, by gaining seven yards on a third and six. Two plays later, Stewart was sacked for a 8 yard loss, which then resulted in a 31 yard field goal by Edinger to make it 17-3. The Packers would answer the field goal, with a score of their own on the next drive. Green would gain 11 yards each on two seperate plays. Several plays later, Favre passed to William Hendersen for a gain of 15 yards down to the 17. Two plays later, Favre tossed a 14 yard pass to Hendersen for the touchdown and following Longwell's kick it was now 24-3. The Bears would narrow the gap to 24-6 before the half ended, as Edinger would kick a 34 yard field goal.
The Packers threatened to bury the Bears in the third quarter. After Stewart was sacked and intercepted on two successive plays, the Packers had good field position at the 45. Green Bay tried a fake field goal play, which saw Hendersen run for a 14 yard gain on fourth and 16. The Packers turned it over on downs to Chicago, who eventually converted a 41 yard field goal by Edinger to make it 24-9 at the end of three.
Early in the fourth, the Bears narrowed the gap to 24-16, as Anthony Thomas ran for a 67 yard touch down on second and 1 at the 33. Green Bay answered that score with a touchdown of their own. Starting at the 35, Favre led a 7 play drive. Green gained 33 yards on a carry getting the Packers down to the 13. Two plays later, on third and 9, Favre passed to Javon Walker for the score. Longwell added the extra point, making it 31-16. After the Bears failed to answer the call on their next drive, Favre and the Packers sealed the victory with another touchdown. Favrekept the drive alive on third and 2, as he passed to Franks for 15 yards. A pass interference call against the Bears, gave Green Bay a first and goal at the 1. Favre passed to Bubba Franks again for the touchdown and a 38-16 lead. The Bears tried to come from behind for the win on the next drive(s). First Stewart led a 13 play-69 yard drive for the touch down, which he scored from one yard out and with the extra point made it 38-23. The Bears then recoverd the on-sides kick off.But the game was saved for the Packers when N'aill Diggs would get his second interception of the game a few plays later.
