Headline: BigE's Post Green Bay Packers Draft Re-Cap
1st Round: 20th Pick
Javon Walker, WR, Florida State
6-2, 210 pounds - 23 years old
The Packers traded up 8 picks to the 20th pick to select Javon Walker, a tall receiver with great speed, in the first round of the NFL draft. The Seattle Seahawks traded their first round pick (20th) and a fifth round pick (156th) for the Packers first round pick (28th) and their second round pick (60th). This was a gamble, but the lack of depth in the draft made this all possible. Early on Walker was looking like a 2nd round pick, but after the combine he shot up the charts. The Packers were thinking that the two linebackers they had their eyes on, would not be there for them in the second round. This made it a “no brainer” for the Packers to make this trade. The Packers timed Walker at 4.35 and 4.39 in the 40. Senior year he caught 45 passes for 944 yards, for a 21.0 yard average and 7 TD's. In the biggest game of his career, Walker shined, catching 4 passes for 195 yards and 2 TD's in the Gator Bowl against Virginia Tech. Scored 9 on the Wonderlic.
3rd Round: 92nd Pick
Marques Anderson, S-CB, UCLA
5-11, 213 pounds - 22 years old
This second team all-Pac-Ten performer started 33 of 46 games in his college career. Finished his collegiate career with 8 picks, 16 tackles for loss, 40 passes broken up, 4 sacks, 5 fumbles recovered and 9 fumbles forced. Played safety his last two years at UCLA, but has good cover skills. Anderson is a sure tackler, and excels in making open field tackles. Ran a 4.51 in the 40. Scored 22 on the Wonderlic.
4th Round: 135th Pick
Najeh Davenport, FB, Miami
6-0, 248 pounds - 23 years old
Davenport backed up at RB for the Hurricanes for his first three seasons. Then switched to FB his senior season. Very fast for how big he is. Davenport would have been a 2nd round pick if it weren’t for suffering a broken bone in his foot, right before the Orange Bowl. He should fit nicely in the Packers scheme. Excellent hands coming out of the backfield. Ran a 4.59 in the 40. Scored a 19 on the Wonderlic.
5th Round: 156th Pick
Aaron Kampman, DE-DT, Iowa
6-4, 285 pounds, - 22 years old
Started 37 of 44 collegiate games, including 11 at middle linebacker in his sophomore season. Then started his final 2 seasons at DE. Led the Big Ten with 9 sacks his senior season. Finished his collegiate career with 18 sacks, 30 tackles for loss, 8 passes defended, 2 fumbles recovered, and 4 fumbles forced. This kid has a motor that never stops. Scored a 17 on the Wonderlic.
5th Round: 164th Pick
Craig Nall, QB, Northwestern St. (La.)
6-2, 228 pounds, - 23 years old
Backed up for three years at LSU, then transferred to Northwestern St. for his final season. Finished the season completing 56.8% of his passes, 11 TD’s, and 3 picks. GM Mike Sherman had Nall rated 5th best QB on the board. The Head Coach/GM likes Nall’s quick feet and arm strength.
6th Round: 200th Pick
Mike Houghton, G-T, San Diego St.
6-5, 315 pounds, - 22 years old
Houghton is considered a very physical player, able to play any position on the offensive line. Houghton will add depth for the Packers after losing Barry Stokes in the off season. Runs the 40 in 5.16. Did 28 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds.
