Headline: Green Bay Packers Pre-Draft News & Notes
Thursday 3/26/02
The Green Bay Packers signed free agent defensive end
Joe Johnson to a lucrative multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but
sources close to negotiations said the 6'4" 280-pound former
New Orleans Saint will make an average of $5 million a year, with a $6 million
signing bonus. This is a major coup for the Packers who landed the best defensive
player in free agency.
Johnson, a first round pick in 1994, has been to the
Pro Bowl twice in his 8 year career.
Johnson is as adept at stopping the run as he is rushing the passer. More
importantly, he is a relentless worker who is a positive influence in the locker room.
Thursday 3/14/02
Former Packers WR Bill Schroeder has signed a 4-year contract with the
Detroit Lions. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but sources close to
negotiations report Schroeder will receive a signing bonus of $2.5 million, with the
total deal averaging around $6 million.
Wednesday 3/13/02
Former Packer CB/KR Allen Rossum signed a three year deal with the
Atlanta Falcons in the neighborhood of $3 million over three years. Sources say the
Packers offer was similar, but Rossum signed with the
Falcons when he was told he would
have an opportunity in the competition for the No. 3 cornerback. Despite injury problems
last season, Rossum was a threat to hit a home run while returning punts. He was also
serviceable as a defensive back in nickel and dime packages. Rossum will be sorely missed.
Sunday 3/10/02
Former Packers WR Corey Bradford signed a free agent deal with the
Houston Texans. Terms were not released. In his four years as a Packer, Bradford
caught 71 passes for 1,190 yards and 7 TD's. Bradford had blazing speed, but never really
realized his potential. Through the terms of the contract were not released, it is believed
that the
Texans signed Bradford for much more than the Packers were willing to give him.
Friday 3/08/02
Packers G Mike Wahle signed a multi-year deal to stay with the Packers. Terms of the
contract were not released. This was a big signing for the Packers. It allowed the
Packers to keep in tact an offensive line that was stellar last year.
Friday 3/08/02
The Packers gave up an unconditional 4th round choice in 2002, and conditional performance
based choice in 2004 for the rights to former
New England Patriots WR
Terry Glenn. The Packers then signed Glenn to a multi-year deal. Terms of the contract
were not announced. Sources close to the deal said the Packers are protected with
misconduct clauses that are in place because of
Glenn's checkered past. Packers GM/Head
Coach Mike Sherman earned his stripes on this signing. Though
Glenn has had problems in
the past, coach Sherman believes Green Bay will provide an environment that will allow him
the support needed to put the past behind him. The Packers have not had a receiver this
good since Sterling Sharpe, and
Glenn is much faster than the former Packer receiver.
Friday 3/01/02
The Packers re-sign FB William Henderson to a four year contract. Terms of the contract
were not disclosed. Henderson is a team leader in the locker room and has help open holes
for a few 1,000 yard rushers. What's more impressive is the fact that the Packers needed
someone to help out on kick coverage, a duty mostly reserved for younger players, and Williams
stepped forward. You cannot place enought emphasis on re-signing a player that will do
anything to help the team. William Henderson is one of those players.
