In the wind and rain of San Francisco, Brett Favre improved his life time record against the 49'ers to 9-1 as the Packers recorded their eleventh victory of the season on Sunday by the score of 20-14.
Neither team scored on their initial possession. On the 49'ers second possession of the game, all they could muster was another punt. Following their punt, the Packers took over at the 46. Twice during the drive, Favre kept it alive by converting on third down. Initially on third and four from the 48, Favre passed to Fisher for a gain of five. Later, on third and five from the 39, Favre connected with Driver for a gain of nine. The drive eventually stalled, and Longwell came on and booted a 48 yard field goal to give the Packers a 3-0 lead.
The 49'ers would come back and tie the game at 3-3 midway through the second quarter, as Chandler would connect from 47 yards out. Following that scoring drive, the Packers failed to move the ball,and were forced to punt.
The 49'ers took over at the 32. On third and three, Hearst broke ne open for a gain of 11. The 49'ers converted on two more third downs, before the drive broke down. Chandler kicked a 42 yard field goal with :07 remaining to give the 49'ers a 6-3 lead at halftime.
The Packers came out to open the second half and marched right down the field. Favre passed to Terry Glenn for a gain of 22. Then he passed to Tyronne Davis for a gain of 12. On first and goal at the 9, Ahmann Green broke through and scored the touch down. The drive covered 79 yards in 9 plays and gave the Packers a 10-6 lead. On the next drive for San Francisco, Hearst gained 13 yards on the first play. Next, on first down at the 35, Garcia was intercepted. The ball initially bounced off the back of Matt Willig, Vonnie Holliday caught it,and started running, as he was about to be tackled, he lateralled the ball to N'aill Diggs, who ran down to the 29, before being forced out of bounds. Favre took over from there. He passed to Franks for a gain of nine. On first and goal at the 9, Green gained four yards. On second and goal at the five, Favre passed to Donald Driver for the touch down. Longwell added the p.a.t. and the Packers led 17-6.
The 49'ers would storm back on their next possession and score before the quarter ended. Garcia diected an eight play-73 yard drive, which saw him pass to Terrell Owens for a 45 yard touch down. They converted for two points and the score was 17-14 as the third quarter drew to a close.
Early in the fourth, Longwell missed a filed goal from 42 yards, but the 49'ers were unable to move the ball,and went three plays and out on the very next drive. Green Bay took over at the 37 following the punt. Once again, Favre kept the drive alive by converting on several key third down plays. First,on third and eight, Favre passed to Glenn for a gain of 16, out to the 45. On first down, Green gained 13. A few plays later, on third and four, Favre connected with Henderson for ten yards. The drive eventually stalled, and Longwell came in and kicked a 28 yard field goal, which gave the Packers a 20-14 lead.
San Francisco, drove down field, and looked poised to score the game winning touch down., but on fourth and seven from the 11 with just 26 seconds left, Garcia scrambled out of the pocket, and threw a desperation pass, which was intercepted.
