Headline: A LITTLE KICK LEFT IN LIONS AS PACK WIN 17-9 at LAMBEAU Game MVP: Cullen Jenkins Offensive Player of the Game: Vernand Morency Defensive Player of the Game: Al Harris
As has been the norm since 1994 in Green Bay when Detroit rolls into town the Pack kick it into gear and come away with a victory.
This was again was the case as the only points the Lions could muster were on three kicks by long time Lion kicker Jason Hanson. The Lions could only kick themselves for not being able to capitalize on a day in which Brett Favre and the passing game could only muster 174yds and zero tds
But the defense is what kept the Packers playoff hopes alive and kickin this week with 6 sacks,2 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries bringing the teams record to 6-8 with two to go.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: CULLEN JENKINS--Jenkins had 2.5 sacks,5 tackles,a fumble recovery in his second start for KGB.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: VERNAND MORENCY--Morency showed his talents as a runner with vision ,speed ,power, and shiftiness needed to be an every down back.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME:AL HARRIS-- Harris shut down the lions only threat WR Roy Williams by holding him to 1 catch for 11 yds.
GOLD BAR RATINGS
(1-5 BARS)
QB: 2 GOLD BARS-- Favre has had better games this season. Even with six drops by would be receivers he still managed to complete 54 % of his passes. Two of the 3 int's thrown by Brett two were on tipped balls the third was on a forced ball to TE David Martin. Yet when given time he still made some questionable decisions Sunday trying to force things a little . The only good thing about these instances is it is obvious Mike McCarthy doesn't think much of Favres reckless throws.
RB'S:3-1/2 GOLD BARS-- Ahman Green had another solid outing going 22-79 yds. Pounding the opponents defense and softening them up like he always has weather it was for Najeh Davenport in the past or Vernand Morency in Sundays game. Morency took advantage of this for 7 carries for 54 yds and 2 scores. On both scores Morency showed his multi-dimensional ball carry skills. William Henderson played super again this week not hesitating when looking for people to block and sticking them.
WR/TE:1 GOLD BAR:--Weather through free agency or the draft next year the need for a TE has become a top priority for the offense. Fourteen points were left on the tundra Sunday by the TE's. The past two seasons the TE play in Green Bay has been horrible. Players unable to get open ,dropping balls, and missing blocking assignments. David Martin dropped a td then left the game later because of injury again. Some one with the Packers please cut this guy next year. He never will be healthy enough to play more then 4 games in a row and eats up a roster spot. Donald Driver had a human game with 7 catches for 70 yds. Since Greg Jennings hurt his ankle and came back in the past 4 games he has barely averaged 8.5 yds a catch while trying to be productive. Yet that plan may not have worked out the best as he seems to have lost his big play ability in the wake of the injury.
OFFENSIVE LINE: 2-1/2 GOLD BARS-- Would have been three bars if not for C Scott Wells continued problem picking up Favres cadence.Hopefully Wells can ratchet up the focus and get this in check. To top it off he was pushed around on some running plays resulting in two carries for no gain. Undoubtedly all the young line men make mistakes each week resulting in bad plays. The encouraging part of it is as a unit the interior line play has improved steadily all season. Chad Clifton left just before half with a shoulder problem but returned in the 2ND half. Jason Spitz played a little center when Wells had shoe problems.
DEFENSIVE LINE:4 GOLD BARS-- The best thing about the lines 6 sack performance was 3 of them came on non passing downs. Not when everyone in the stadium knew the Lions where going to throw. Consistent pressure was the name of the game as Jon kitna was not allowed to stand back in the pocket comfortably and pick out targets on first and second down. Cullen Jenkins responded quite well in his first start for KGB registering 2.5 sacks and helping hold Detroit to 58 yds in 20 carries. Aaron Kampman got himself back on track with 2 sacks of Kitna as well.
LB'S: 3 GOLD BARS-- A quite day for the LB's .No sacks, picks,or strips. On the positive there were no big plays from the RB's out of the back Field or tight ends wide open scathing balls down the middle. The Packers played more dime then they have since the Ram game taking AJ hawk off the Field and bringing in Safety Ty Culver to play on passing downs. Maybe this took Hawk out of his game as he had his worst game as a Packer and ended up with only three tackles.
DB'S : 4 GOLD BARS-- For as little as Kitna was able to do against the secondary the rating could have been slightly higher if not for the competition. Take away a couple of cheap completions late to Lions WR Mike Williams and Charles Woodson and Al Harris again shut down a teams top two WR's forcing them to go after Patrick Dendy. For the second week in a row that strategy has failed for the opposition. Also for the second week in a row Safeties Marquand Manuel and Nick Collins played mistake free football. When Collins plays at a high level it filters down to the rest of the secondary as it should allowing the corners to play even tighter knowing he has there back.
SPECIAL TEAMS: 3 GOLD BARS-- The Packers coverage units played fast and hard . Holding former Pro Bowler Eddie Drummond to a paltry 5.5 yds on 4 punt returns. On 4 kickoffs the Packers held him to only 17.0 yds a return. Ben Taylor and Jason Hunter had nice days in coverage both making tackles of Drummond . Again the Packers own return game went no where. Jon Ryan bounced back from some tough outings to average 42 yds a punt. Dave Rayner nailed his only FG attempt from 24 yds out.
