Headline: Green Bay Packers vs San Francisco Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers got a big lift from their monsterous nose tackle Gilbert Brown,
and shut down the potent San Francisco 49ers rushing game on their way to a 25-15
victory. With Brown in the Lineup for the first time in four weeks, the Packers
Defense finally shut down the RVN. The Packers had given up an average of 170 yards
rushing per game in the last four games without Brown in the line up, But Sunday was
a different story As the defense held the NFL's Number One Rushing Offense to 71 yards.
That is where it all begins, with Rushing Defenese. A strong defense Leo the Baltimore
Ravens to the Super Bowl, and won it with an offense that was leo by Trent Dilfer. The
Packers Defense is not as good as that Ravens Defense, but with big Gilbert Brown in
the middle, the Packers are a much Stronger Unit.
THE OFFENSE
The Packers defense finally got something out of their backup wideouts. Corey Bradford
and Donald Driver each had two big catches. First Bradford made a leaping catch for 51
yards, then made a one handed grab for a big third down conversion. Driver had his big
plays come when it counted the most, in the fourth quarter. With the score tied and the
Packers facing a 3rd and 8,
Brett Favre threw high and Drive went up and pulled it in.
Driver showed excellent athletic ability in going up for that ball, and made the catch with
the defender all over him. Then with the score 18-15, driver made a veteran move when he
sat down in the zone, and
Favre hit him for 12 yards on a third and 6. This is just what
the doctor ordered for the Packers Offense. The Packers will need to get a few more big
plays from Bradford and Driver this week against the Greatest Show on Turf, the
St. Louis Rams.
The Packers running game was also clicking on Sunday, as
Ahman Green ran through numerous
tackles on his way to 86 yards on 21 carries for a hefty 4.1 yards per carry.
Green looked
sharp, banging up the middle for yardage that was all earned.
Green also hasn't fumbled
since week 10. It will be interesting to see if the Packers will be commited to the run
against the
Rams. Will the Packers need some big plays through the air? Sure, but the
Packers need to put
Ahman Green 7 yards deep inthe I-Formation, and pound away at the Rams
Defense. They will need to do this to use as much clock as possible, to keep the
Rams
Offense off the field.
THE DEFENSE
As is said in the opening paragraph, Gilbert Brown was instrumental in stopping the
49ers rushing attack. There were many other hero's for the Packers Defense on Sunday.
Cletious Hunt came up big finishing with five tackles, including one spectacular play in
which the 300 pound tackle knifed through the line to tackle Garrison Hearst for a 5 yard
loss. This kid is just teasing us, showing how good he can be when he turns up the
intensity.
This day however, belonged to Keith McKenzie. One day after signing a sizable contract,
McKenzie showed he is worth every penny. He just keeps making plays when the Packers
need them the most. Playing against Terrell Owens, arguably one of the best receivers in
the
NFL, held him to 4 catches for 40 yards. Twice Owens had him beat for touchdowns, and
twice McKenzie recovered to knock the ball away. The second of the two plays, was the
BackBreaker that turned the game around. With the Packers leading 18-15, McKenzie tipped
a Jeff Garcia pass that was intended for a wide open Owens, and Tyrone Williams came over
to make the pick. I have a new nickname for McKenzie, "The Eliminator!", He eliminates all
big plays!
The Packers will need all the big plays they can get this week against the
Rams. McKenzie
and his crew will have their hands full against the
Rams speedy receivers. The Packers
will have to put pressure on Kurt Warner has shown this year that he will turn the ball
over. If that happens, the Pack will be able to pull the Big Upset, and become the team to
Beat from the NFC! That's the way I saw it! BigE
