Gilbert Brown set the atmosphere on the first play of the game Sunday, when he sacked Jeff Garcia for a four yard loss. That pumped up the defense, and the offense although it sputtered at times, came through when needed, and together gave the Packers a 25-15 victory.
Brown started the game by sacking Jeff Garcia.then on second down, Cletius Hunt tackled Garrison Hearst for a five yard loss. The next play, Hearst gained ten yards, but San Francisco had to punt. While Favre wasn't sacked on his first series, the Packers also went three and out.
The Niners gained some ground on their second possession, but the drive still resulted in a punt. The Packers started their second drive at the 40 with 8:01 remaining.The drive was set up by a nice 35 yard punt return from Allan Rossum. Favre directed a seven play-40 yard drive which ended with a five yard touch down pass to Antonio Freeman. Longwell's p.a.t. was blocked and the Packers led 6-0.The teams traded possessions for the remainder of the quarter.
San Francisco had the ball to poen the second quarter, from a drive that started late in the first quarter. Garcia was looking sharp moving the Niners down field. On third and three at the six, Garcia was sacked for a ten yard loss by Darren Sharper. That set up a 34 yard field goal attempt by Cortez, which was BLOCKED by Cletius Hunt, to allow the Packers to maintain the lead at 6-0.
On the Packers next drive, Favre managed to pick up a few first downs, but nothing else, so after eight plays, Bidwell came on to punt. San Francisco took over at the 14 with 7:06 remaining in the half. Garcia opened his passing game, hitting Streets for a gain of 11, followed by a pass to Jackson for a gain of 19 down to the 13. Five plays later,on second and goal from the two, Hearst ran it in for the touchdown. Cortez added the point after, and San Francisco took a 7-6 lead at Halftime.
The Packers opened the third quarter with the ball first. Favre threw two passes to Schroeder for gains of 15 and 6 yards. Several running plays then netted positive yardage. After that, the drive stalled out, and Longwell came in and kicked a 26 yard field goal to regain the lead for the Packers at 9-7. The Niners first possession of the second half resulted in a punt after seven plays. The Packers took it back at the 19. On first down, William Henderson ran for 13 yards. Green lost a yard on the next play. On second and 11 at the 30, Favre threw deep to Corey Bradford who caught it and gained 51 yards down to the 19. The next play, Favre threw to Bubba Franks for a 19 yard touchdown, making the score 15-7. Mike Sherman, elected to go for two points on the conversion, but Favre's pass to Driver was incomplete, so it remained 15-7 as the third quarter ended a few minutes later.
The Niners would strike back and tie the game early in the fourth quarter. Garcia directed a 6 play-61 yard drive in just under three minutes, which concluded when he passed on third and eight at the 14 to Ty Streets for the touchdown. The Niners then elected to go for two. Garcia passed to a wide open Ty Streets for the conversion and it was 15-15 with 12:00 remaining in the game. Favre and the Packers came back and regained control of the game on the next drive. Favre directed a 10 play-49 yard drive, in which he completed passes to Driver for 14 yards, and Freeman for 14 and 13 yards. After Favre was sacked for a seven yard loss, Longwell came in a kicked a 45 yard field goal for a 18-15 lead.
The Packers would seal their victory on the Niners next drive, as Tyronne Wiliams INTERCEPTED a pass from Garcia, giving the Packers the ball at the seven, with 4:53 left. Just when it looked like Green Bay would have to punt back to San Francisco, the offense came up big. On third and seven at the 38..... Favre passed to Freeman for a gain of 38 yards. Four plays later, Ahmann Green scored the touchdown from nine yards out to make the FINAL SCORE
