Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears Game Summary
The Green Bay Packers took another step in proving they are the team to beat in the
Central Division, by putting away the
Chicago Bears by a score of 20-12. People can say the
Bears were lucky in their last two games, but the
Bears are a good young team, with
a good coaching staff. The
Bears organization made some good football
descisions most recently in the draft, and in the free agent market.
The last couple of years the bears have picked up Ted Washington, Keith Traylor,
R.W. McQuarters, and Phillip Daniels. The draft was also very good to the Bears,
plucking players such as Anthony Thomas, David Terrell, Brian Urlacher, Walt Harris,
Mike Brown, and Rosevelt Colvin. These are the makings of a very good young team. But
on this day, the Bears recent string of luck was cut short by a stingy Packer defense.
Credit good play calling and execution for the
Bears, when they moved the ball
between the 20-yard lines. But the Packer defense made plays necessary to snuff out
Bear drives.
THE OFFENSE
The emergence of
Bill Schroeder was proven once again, as he stepped up while hurt,
and produced 4 catches for 100 yards. The biggest being a
41-yard strike (Click Here to View Billy's Catch!) from
Brett Favre
in the back of the endzone for a touchdown, with 45 seconds left in the half.
This should not diminish the season that
Antonio Freeman is having. Sure he has
lost a step, but when was the last time
Freeman had a drop? This offense needs both
Schroeder and
Freeman (and the rest of the wide receivers), to be hitting on all
cylinders.
Ahman Green averaged a robust 5.2 yards per carry in rambling for 93 yards. The
Bears have given up only two runs of 12-yards or more in seven games this
year, yet
Green ripped off three in one game. Unfortunatly
Green has put the ball
on the ground three times in the last three games. Still,
Green looks as if he
cold break any one of these runs, and go the distance. There's maybe a handful of
running backs in the NFL, who have his great combination of speed and power. This
kid is
Pro-Bowl caliber, and should get a ticket to Hawaii this year!
THE DEFENSE
Wow! this unit played on heck of a game! Players were making plays all over the
field for the Packer defense. I have been saying this every week, but Ed Donatell is
a genius. The defense was playing as if they were in the Bears huddle. In the
second quarter,
Darren Sharper blitzed off the corner to tackle Anthony Thomas for a
six yard loss on third and two. That play was just awesome. That is simply a sign
that a defense is well prepared.
The Packers defense was even getting big plays from unexpected sources. Tod McBride
made a couple exceptional plays, and defensive linemen Santana Dotson and Jim Flannigan
provided an inside push. One player the Packers have come to expect big plays from is
Keith McKenzie. Teams keep going at him and he just refuses to allow the big play.
McKenzie has cover instincts that are almost un-teachable. He can really put the
clamps down on any wide-out, and is a tenacious hitter. Speaking of hitting, Nate
Wayne is a true warrior. He just seeks out ball carriers and destroy's them. Finally,
LeRoy Butler showed how valuable he really is. He came up big in this game, making
tackles on run support and in 11 tackles. That is really a big game for a 12th year
guy who has lost a step over the years. That is a sign of a well prepared player,
who got himself in right places to make plays.
The Packers have done a good job of righting the ship after the poor outing in
Minnesota. They now come back home against Atlanta, and should be able to take
care of business. The Packers have a chance to win their next three games
to go 9-2, with five games left. But first things first, Packers take
Falcons
29-10. That's the way I saw it! BigE
