Headline: Green Bay Packers vs Baltimore Ravens Game Summary
Wow! Where do I begin? The Green Bay Packers Simply
demolished the Super Bowl Champion Balitmore Ravens
31-23, in front of an appreciative crowd of 59,866.
The Packers showed the rest of the NFL, that this is a
team to be reckoned with! The Packers just spread the field out by using four,
and sometimes five reciever sets, and our three time MVP
Brett Favre picked apart the
Ravens defense. The Packers were also very effective out of the shotgun
formation. This allowed
Favre to get a quick read of the corners and Blitzing
linebackers, and also allowed him to get to his drop quicker. Credit is also
due to the men upfront. Mark Tauscher, Mike Wahle, Mike Flannigan, Marco
Rivera, and Chad Clifton, THIS BUDS FOR YOU! These guy's certainly deserve the Game
Ball!
THE OFFENSE
The Packers offense started out with a fumble on their first drive. Looking
at an early 7-0 deficit,
Favre went to work after Leroy Butler created a fumble,
and hit
Bubba Franks for a 2-yard touchdown. There were several key plays on this
drive, including a short pass underneath to
Bill Schroeder that went for
14 yards on a 3rd and 3. Then the forgotten man,
Antonio Freeman, got into the
act. After an early drop,
Freeman made a nice snare of a
Favre bullet for 19
yards. He then sat nicely in the zone and made a sure handed grab for 8 yards.
It was great to see
Freeman break out of his slump. Truth is, the Packers
were not going to be running the ball against this vaunted defense, so they needed
Freeman to step up... and he did in a big way! Freeman finished with 9 catches
for 138 yards.
Later in the second quarter, after a Ryan Longwell field goal gave the Packers
a 10-7 lead,
Favre then struck deep for a
47-yard bomb to Corey Bradford.
Favre then threaded the needle for 13 yards to
Freeman. With 8 seconds left in the half, Favre rolled right and found
Freeman in the front corner of the endzone for an 8-yard score that gave the
Packers a 17-7 lead at half. After giving up a field goal to make the score
17-10, the Packers needed to get back to work.
Favre was incredible on this drive.
He first hit
Freeman for a 14-yard gain, then drilled Donald Driver for 37 yards
on a critical 3rd and 10. Tom Rossley, the Packers Offensive Coordinator made
the call of the bame by running a draw to
Ahman Green. After our passing
game dinked and dunked down the field. This play call was magnificent! On
3rd and 9
Green exploded through a huge hole for 19 yards. After a pass
interference penalty brought the ball to the 1-yard line,
Green went right up
the middle for the score to make it 24-10. The Packers then scored with 6:59
left in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. GAME OVER MAN!
THE DEFENSE
First things first, the Packers defense did what they had to do. Don't let the
2 meaningless touchdowns at the end, taint this victory. After an early fumble,
the Packers defense looked suspect, as Ravens quarterback Elvis Grbac found open
recievers on consecutive plays. The second open reciever was Travis Taylor,
who scored to make it a 7-0 game. After that drive, the Packers defense
completely shut down the Ravens. The run defense was strong, as it limited
Terry Allen to 75 yards on 18 carries for a 4.2 yard average. That number was
padded by a few of his longest carries of the day, with the Packers holding
a 31-10 lead. Darren Sharper was spectacular, as he ran all over the field making
10 takles. Sharper also knifed in front of Quadry Ismail to pick Grbac's pass in
the third quarter, to stop the drive at the Packers 22-yard line. Keith
McKenzie and Santana Dotson also produced key turnovers. Grbac went deep to
Travis Taylor, and at just the right moment McKenzie looked back and found the
ball to make the pick. (This kid is a Real Player!) Dotson's came in the second
quarter when he blew past the offensive lineman and knock the ball out of Grbac's
hand. In a game where the Packers defense would not mount much of a pass
rush, the play was huge.
If the Packers defense can continue to create turnovers, and the receivers
play the way they did on Sunday, this team is ready to challenge for NFC
supremacy. The Packers are still struggling in the return game and kick
coverages, but with Allen Rossum due to return, (No Pun Intended) you have to
figure the Packers will only get better. One last note: Thank You Ron Wolf
for showing people that you can make a few mistakes in the first round, but
recover nicely by taking guys in the later rounds, that would be Prime Time
Players. Some of the players:
Mark Tauscher - 7th Round
Chad Clifton - 2nd Round
Mike McKenzie - 2nd Round
David Martin - 6th Round
Bill Schroeder - Free Agent
Tyrone Williams - 2nd Round
I could go on and on! Mike Sherman is already a great coach, I just hope some
of Wolf's draft saavy rubbed of on him! And That's they way I saw it!.... BigE
