Headline: Bears Spoil Packers Home Opener Defensive Player of the Game: Brian Urlacher& Mike Brown= forced fumble-returned 95 yards for touchdown
Give new Bears head coach Lovey Smith credit. When he first took the head coach job in January, he was quoted as having said that his number 1 priority as the Bears new head coach was to defeat the Packers.
It only took him 1 try, as the Chicago Bears faced the Packers on Sunday, and handed the Packers a 21-10 defeat.
Things started out good for Green Bay, as they moved the ball well on the game's opening drive. On a third and nine at the 39, Green gained 25 yards down to the 36. The drive resulted in a 25 yard field goal from Longwell giving the Packers an early 3-0 lead. The Bears started their opening drive at the 26 and immeadiatly gained 31 yards on a pass from Grossman to Desmond Clark. But that was all, Edinger attempted to tie the game with a 55 yard field goal, but missed it. The teams traded field position for the remainder of the first quarter.
After Longwell missed a 45 yard field goal early in the second, the Bears took over at the 35. On first down, Thomas Jones gained 19 out to the 46. Grossman then passed to Brian Johnson for a gain of 14 down to the 32.
Six plays later on first and goal at the 10, Grossman passed to Bryan Johnson for the touchdown. Edinger added the p.a.t. and the Bears took a 7-3 lead.
On the Packers next drive, the Bears played take-away. At first they intercepted a Favre pass intended for Driver. Green returned it 45 yards. The Packers challenged the play and it was reversed in the Packers favor. But two plays later Favre was intercepted again. Unable to move the ball, Chicago punted right back to Green Bay. The Packers started at the 41. On first down, Favre tossed to Henderson for a gain of 13. Following runs of 7 and 11 yards from Green, the Packers found themselves with first and goal at the 2. On the next play, Favre handed off to Green...... Ahmann hit the line and had the ball knocked loose by BRIAN URLACHER...... MIKE BROWN then scooped up the loose ball and returned it 95 yards for a Bears touchdown. Following the p.a.t. Chicago extended the lead to 14-3.
The Bears came out in the third and for all intense purposes sealed the victory. On a third and one at the 30, Thomas Jones ran for a gain of 54 yards down to the 30. Two plays later at the 16, Jones gained 11 yards to set up a first and goal at the 5. Jones carried the next two times for gains of 4 and 1 yards for the touchdown. With the p.a.t., Chicago had control of the game at 21-3.
The Packers were down but not out. Their next drive was a dominating, clock controlled drive of 19 plays-89 yards- in 9:45 resulting in a Favre to Ferguson Touchdown pass, which narrowed the gap to 21-10 as the third quarter drew to a close.
The fourth quarter saw the Packers fight back, but to no success. A crucial interception thrown by Favre late in the quarter ended a potential scoring drive, and the Bears left Lambeau with a 21-10 victory.
