Green Bay Packers 2009 Draft Picks
B.J. Raji - NT - Round 1 - Boston College
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
The Packers pick up a dominating nose tackle to anchor their new 3-4 defense. Raji excels at whipping double teams,
and his presence in the middle will keep blockers off A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett. Though many thought the Packers
would opt for a pass rusher, the decision to fortify their run defense will go a long way toward helping them
increase their sack total.
Clay Matthews - LB - Round 1 - USC
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
The Packers add a versatile outside linebacker to their 3-4. Matthews' multi-dimensional game serves as the
perfect complement to Aaron Kampman. As a credible rushing threat with underrated cover skills, Matthews gives
Dom Capers the ability to mix and match rush schemes. Though he only spent one season as a starter in college, he
has the potential to be a solid pro in the Packers' defense.
G/T T.J. Lang - G/T - Round 4 - Eastern Michigan
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
Lang elevated his play each and every year. He came into last season as a prospect who was not really
highly regarded. He's got good punch and is a combative, physical player. His challenge may come in playing
against speedy defensive linemen. He's going to add strength and zone-blocking ability to the Packers' offensive line.
Quinn Johnson - FB - Round 5 - LSU
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
The former Tiger is a downhill lead blocker with good power and toughness. He excels at blowing linebackers
out of the hole and is a throwback at the position. He will compete for the right to open holes for Ryan Grant next season.
Jamon Meredith - OT - Round 5 - South Carolina
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
The former Gamecock may emerge as one of the draft's biggest sleepers after landing with the Packers. Meredith
has multi-positional flexibility and will add quality depth to their offensive-line rotation.
Jarius Wynn - DE - Round 6 - Georgia
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
Wynn has good size for a defensive end. His coach in college, Mark Richt, says he will make a pro
team. He ran pretty well and is a solid interior linemen for the Packers' new 3-4 program.
Brandon Underwood - CB - Round 6 - Cincinnati
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
Underwood was extremely productive and can play both safety and cornerback. He's probably more of a safety at the NFL level, but he can play some corner and gives the Packers some secondary depth.
Brad Jones - LB - Round 7 - Colorado
NFL.com Draft Analysis:
Jones can run well and has outstanding speed. Teams are increasingly looking for players who can play three downs and/or on special teams, and Jones may provide just that kind of fit for the Packers.
